Creatine has moved from the back corner of the supplement shop to something a lot of Australian women are now weighing up, and the shelf has filled accordingly. Tubs range from about twenty dollars to well over a hundred, in half a dozen chemical forms, with a growing number of them marketed specifically at women.
Most of what separates those products is packaging. A few things genuinely matter. This guide covers what to actually compare when you are choosing a creatine in Australia, which is form, dose, purity and cost per gram, and what you can safely ignore.

Start with the form
Creatine is sold as monohydrate, hydrochloride, buffered forms such as Kre-Alkalyn, magnesium chelate, and various blends. The marketing around the newer forms tends to promise better absorption, less bloating, or smaller doses. The research does not support paying more for them.
The International Society of Sports Nutrition position stand describes creatine monohydrate as the most effective ergogenic nutritional supplement currently available for increasing high intensity exercise capacity and lean body mass during training. It is also the form the overwhelming majority of the research has actually used, which matters, because a claim about creatine generally is only reliable for the form that was tested.
Where the alternatives have been tested head to head, they have not come out ahead. A 2012 trial published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition compared a buffered creatine product against ordinary monohydrate across 28 days of resistance training and found no greater increase in muscle creatine content, no greater change in body composition, and no greater training adaptation. The monohydrate group actually trended higher on muscle creatine.
What micronised actually means
Micronised creatine is not a different molecule. It is the same creatine monohydrate, mechanically milled into smaller particles. The larger surface area means it disperses more readily in liquid and settles less at the bottom of the glass.
It is worth being clear about what that does and does not buy you. It improves mixing and texture. It does not change the compound, and you should be sceptical of any product charging a large premium for micronisation on the basis of results rather than comfort. That said, if you are stirring it into water every morning rather than blending it into a smoothie, grittiness is the main reason people quietly stop taking creatine, so texture is not a trivial consideration.
Dose, and how to compare value properly
The ISSN position stand puts a typical maintenance intake at 3 to 5 grams per day. A loading protocol of roughly 20 grams daily for five to seven days saturates muscle stores faster, but it is optional. A steady 3 grams a day reaches the same saturation point over about four weeks.
This matters for comparison shopping, because tub size tells you nothing on its own. What you want is cost per gram, or cost per serve at the dose you will actually take. A 300 gram tub at 3 grams per serve is 100 servings. The same 300 grams at a 5 gram serve is 60. Two products at the same shelf price can differ by close to half on cost per day.
Worth knowing as background: research on women specifically is thinner than research on men. The 2021 review in Nutrients on creatine across the female lifespan notes that women show substantially lower endogenous creatine stores than men, and that the evidence base for females remains understudied relative to males. Purity, the thing almost nobody checks
Creatine is manufactured through a chemical synthesis that can leave behind by-products. The main ones are creatinine, dicyandiamide and dihydrotriazines. How much ends up in the finished powder is a direct reflection of manufacturing quality, and it is not something you can see, taste or infer from the price.
An analysis published in Food Chemistry ran 33 commercial creatine supplements through high performance liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. The spread in contamination between products was considerable.
Across 33 commercial creatine supplements, creatinine was the major organic contaminant, with 44 per cent of samples exceeding 100 mg/kg. Around 15 per cent also carried detectable dihydrotriazines and dicyandiamide above 50 mg/kg.
You cannot test this at home, so the practical move is to look for products that publish third party testing or will provide a certificate of analysis on request, and that are willing to tell you where the raw material is manufactured. A brand that treats that as a reasonable question is giving you useful information. One that treats it as commercially sensitive is also giving you useful information.
What you can ignore on the label
Gendered branding, on its own. A tub marked for women tells you who the product is marketed to, not what is inside it. Some of those products are plain monohydrate in a smaller, more practical size. Others are monohydrate blended with collagen, amino acids or sweeteners and sold at a premium. Turn it over and read the ingredient list, because that is where the actual difference is.
Proprietary blends. If a label lists a blend name and a total weight rather than the amount of each ingredient, you cannot tell how much creatine you are getting. There is no good reason to hide a dose.
Loading phases presented as mandatory. Loading is a speed option, not a requirement, and taking a large dose in one go is the most common reason people report stomach discomfort when they start.

The bottom line
A good creatine is an unglamorous product. It is plain monohydrate, one ingredient, a clearly stated dose in the 3 to 5 gram range, milled finely enough to mix without a fight, from a manufacturer willing to show you what is in it. Anything beyond that is usually paying for the tub.
There are several Australian brands selling perfectly good monohydrate, and the checklist above will let you assess any of them on the same terms. Run it across whatever is in front of you rather than trusting the front of the label.
